Garden tiller racing isn't the only sport popular in Emerson. In fact, long before the days of the tiller - back in the era of the mule and plow - the community sort of went nuts about that game called basketball. While our girls basketball teams had won the state title on numerous occasions, the boys teams had always suffered a different fate. Despite getting into the finals and semifinals about as often as any team in the state, they had never reached their ultimate goal, a state championship. Never, that is, until 2001. The PurpleHull Pea Festival congratulates Coach Jim Pennington and the 2001 Emerson Senior Boys Basketball Team - the Arkansas Class 'A' State Champions! Members
