Pitts Prevails in World Cup PurpleHull Pea Shelling Competition

Sometimes just a few peas make a big difference.  Janet Pitts of Stephens narrowly edged out Molene Bailey of Emerson in the World Cup PurpleHull Pea Shelling Competition at Saturday’s Emerson PurpleHull Pea Festival.

In five minutes, Pitts shelled 8 3/4 ounces of purplehulls, compared to Bailey’s 8 5/8 ounces.  Doeleta Weaver of Emerson took third place, shelling 7 3/8 ounces.   All three top finishers are former World Cup pea shelling champs.

In the Youth Division, Danielle Iverson of Springhill outshelled the competition to take top honors, shelling 3 1/4 ounces in five minutes.  Second place went to Sarah Clendenen of Piasa, Illinois, with 3 1/8 ounces.  Third place was a tie between Phillip Fields of Emerson, and Tasha Moore of Falcon, Arkansas, each shelling 2 7/8 ounces.

The World Cup PurpleHull Pea Shelling Competition was sponsored by Lake Sue Nursery & Farm Supply of Magnolia.
